A Glimpse of History
St. John in the Wilderness is one of the oldest Anglican churches in Nainital, founded during the British Raj. Bishop Daniel Wilson chose the site in 1844, reportedly after falling ill and sheltering in an unfinished cottage in the nearby forest—hence its evocative name. The foundation stone was laid in 1846, with construction completed around 1848 and the church consecrated on 2 April that year.
Architecture & Ambience
Nestled amidst towering deodar and pine, the church boasts stunning Neo‑Gothic elements: lancet arches, a bell tower, gargoyle rain spouts, and beautiful stained‑glass windows—some donated by Lady Elgin. Inside, the pews and rose‑style windows evoke a peaceful, reflective atmosphere, making it an enchanting escape from the town’s bustle.
Memorials & Cemetery
On the church grounds lies a memorial plaque for victims of the devastating 1880 landslip, a tragedy that reshaped parts of Nainital. The adjacent cemetery holds graves from 1845 to 1922, including those of Jim Corbett’s parents—echoing the spiritual and historic ties between the church and this renowned conservationist.
