Nestled in the breathtaking Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the Sunderdhunga Glacier is a pristine and less-explored trekking destination. Known as the “Valley of Beautiful Stones,” Sunderdhunga offers adventurers a perfect blend of scenic beauty, thrilling trails, and serene landscapes.
Location and Significance
Located in the Bageshwar district, Sunderdhunga Glacier lies in the lap of the Himalayan ranges. The glacier sits at an altitude of approximately 3,900 meters and is surrounded by majestic peaks like Maiktoli, Tharkot, and Mrigthuni. The name “Sunderdhunga” literally means “beautiful stones,” derived from the glittering rocks and boulders found along the valley.
The Trekking Experience
The Sunderdhunga trek is one of the most challenging yet rewarding treks in the Kumaon region. Starting from the small village of Loharkhet, the trail passes through scenic spots like Dhakuri, Khati, and Jaitoli. Unlike the more popular Pindari and Kafni glacier treks, Sunderdhunga remains less crowded, offering a peaceful and raw Himalayan experience.
Trekkers can enjoy the dense oak and rhododendron forests, cascading waterfalls, glacial streams, and traditional Kumaoni villages along the route. The trek usually takes about 7-9 days and is recommended for those with some trekking experience.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to explore the Sunderdhunga Glacier is from May to October, excluding the monsoon months of July and August due to the risk of landslides. During this period, the weather remains pleasant, with clear skies offering stunning views of the surrounding peaks.
