Mythological Significance
Tungnath Temple is one of the Panch Kedar temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to legend, the temple is associated with the Pandavas from the Mahabharata. It is believed that Lord Shiva disguised himself as a bull to avoid meeting the Pandavas, and his body parts appeared at different locations, forming the Panch Kedar sites. Tungnath is where his arms are said to have appeared.
The Trek to Tungnath
The trek to Tungnath starts from Chopta, often called the “Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand.” It is a short yet rewarding 3.5 km trek that offers panoramic views of snow-capped peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba. The well-paved path, beautiful meadows, and rhododendron forests make the journey refreshing and accessible, even for beginners.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal time to visit Tungnath is from April to November. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the temple is open to devotees. In winter, the temple is closed due to heavy snowfall, but the trek transforms into a snow-covered wonderland, attracting adventure seekers.
