Bhavishya Kedar Temple – Joshimath

Introduction

Nestled in the sacred town of Joshimath, Uttarakhand, the Bhavishya Kedar Temple holds a special place in Hindu beliefs. Unlike other temples with deep-rooted history, this temple is famous for its prophetic significance. It is said to be the future abode of Lord Shiva when the present Kedarnath Temple becomes inaccessible.

The Legend of Bhavishya Kedar

According to local beliefs and ancient prophecies, there will come a time when the Kedarnath Temple will be lost to natural calamities. When that happens, Lord Shiva will reside in the Bhavishya Kedar Temple in Joshimath. The name “Bhavishya” itself means “future” in Hindi, which reflects the temple’s importance in upcoming times.

Location and Surroundings

Bhavishya Kedar Temple is located in Joshimath, Chamoli district, surrounded by beautiful Himalayan peaks and lush greenery. Joshimath is also the winter seat of Lord Badri, adding to its spiritual significance. The peaceful environment and scenic views make it a serene place for meditation and worship.

Mythology and Beliefs

It is believed that Nanda Devi and Trishul guard the temple, and no one will be able to visit the Kedarnath shrine after a certain period. According to local lore, the Narsingh Temple idol’s gradually shrinking arm is a sign that the Kedarnath region will one day become inaccessible, marking the shift of spiritual focus to Bhavishya Kedar.

How to Reach

Joshimath is well connected by road from Rishikesh, Haridwar, and Dehradun. The nearest railway station is in Rishikesh, and the closest airport is the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From Joshimath, the temple is just a short walk away, making it easily accessible for devotees.
